Framing Tips

Picture Framing has two main purposes: visual presentation and protection of artworks.
When done properly, framing should not distract the viewer’s attention away from the work. Framing should accentuate without commanding too much attention. Framing should also protect pieces from the elements and consist of archival or museum standards.
Do:
- Use the best possible quality materials you can afford (e.g., museum and archival mats). Framing should last a very long time and the better protected it is the longer the work will be enjoyed.
- Use U.V. protection glazing whenever possible.
- Ensure that artworks has sufficient spacing, make this a priority when choosing the frame, glass and mat.
- Art should not be pressed up against the corners or against the glass.
Don’t:
- Use flashy colours in the framing, unless the piece is going in a colorful place/the artwork dictates the use of it.
- Hang artwork in direct sunlight. This will seriously undermine the appearance of the piece.
- Expose your art/framing to extreme temperature changes such as leaving in a car or unheated basement. This can result in warping of the frame and degradation of the artwork. When shipping or mailing the piece wrap efficiently, mark as fragile and use climate controlled handling.
